“The film chronicles three generations of Jews with roots in Benghazi, Libya. Based on the memoirs of Vivienne’s mother, Elise Roumani, that were discovered after her death and enhanced by archival footage and interviews, we see 20th century history through the prism of a proud Jewish community that had prospered in a Moslem country for centuries.”

This year’s Tribeca Film Festival saw a variety of fresh, new films, and particularly a surge in documentaries. One such entry was Vivienne Roumani’s Out Of Print, a film exploring the declining state of the print publishing industry, staggering levels of literacy throughout the country, and asking how we the public might try to move forward in the digital age without allowing intellectual knowledge to fall victim to easy answers and search engines.
Portable spoke to Vivienne Roumani about her inspiration for making a film about books, her personal stance on digitization and what she hopes for the future of the written word.

Dive into the riveting debate over the future of ideas, as documentarian Vivienne Roumani tackles the questions confronting and at times confounding the modern word industry. To some, the digital revolution can offer an extraordinary gift to humanity: unfettered access to all published content, assuming future generations have the patience and curiosity for research.
The other side defends copyrights as indispensible in ensuring that the best minds commit their energy and time to the written word. Roumani visits the libraries, book clubs, classrooms and corporate offices on the frontlines of this fight and proves that more is at stake here than how quickly and cheaply we can access the latest bestseller.
